Cutting edge technology with great sound!

This is the second theater sound system that I have added to my house. Before buying this system I shopped around a lot and listened to many systems. My main criteria was sound, not price. This system beat out others that were twice the price. My son and I had been all over town, and our last stop was Circuit City. We cranked the sound on the ONKYO and both of us just said, "WOW! We'll take it!" We were amazed at what we got for the price.
This system is absolutely fantastic! The best thing about it is that for the true audiophile, you will actually be ahead of the technology curve with a 7.1 system. Most the movies out there are made for a 5 speaker system, not a 7. However, this system automatically adjusts. After setting up the system, we tried out Star Wars Episode 3 (a good test for any system!). The THX sound circled throughout all 7 speakers beautifully.
When set up properly, the system will automatically detect the type of surround coming at it. You won't have to manually select anything if you don't want to.
I have a large family/kitchen combo room with a 10 foot ceiling, lots of upholstered furniture, and a large, thick oriental rug on the floor. This system has plenty of power to compensate for sound sucking surroundings. We didn't even get close to maximum volume and my walls were vibrating on the first and second floors.
Be sure to pick up some extra speaker wire unless you are installing this in a relatively small space or you can easily directly route the wire to each speaker. If you have to install the wire in a roundabout way (like most people do to hide the wires) you will run short. While there was actually a decent amount of wire that came with the system, we were short wire for one of the speakers.
Installation is pretty easy. The speaker wire is color coded to make speaker placement easy and the connection nuts are color coded as well.
There are a variety of sound options that are very cool too. At the click of a button on the remote control you can cycle through different preset sound configurations to find one you like. There are a couple that are optimized for music, some for movies, some for cinema sound, or one for "all speaker stereo." With that option, you have only left/right sound on all speakers rather than voices in the front and music in the back. I like that setting for regular TV shows that don't have great sound to begin with.
There is even a sleep timer! I love that option. I use the sleep timer on my TV all the time and it was great not to lose that function when I added this system.
The only downside on this system is style. You won't get some of the cool streamlined tower speakers that other systems have and you'll have to pick up some speaker stands. This system is all about function- not form. But if your speakers are placed right it won't matter anyway.
Here's a tip on the speaker stands- Because the speakers are inside soft wood cases rather than plastic, you have the option to get the cheapest speaker stands around and have them work just fine, because you will easily be able to screw the speakers to the stands. I bought the Atlantic 77305018 and the back speakers are very securely mounted and the wires are completely hidden inside the stand. The back of my back speakers are visible in my configuration because my kitchen is attached to my family room. I bought some black felt and glued it to the back of the speakers for a streamlined look. Very quick and easy fix for the few inches of wire that showed.
I think you will be very happy with this system. I know I am. |

| My boyfriend and I made the decision to spend more on our TV (we bought a Panasonic 58' Plasma) than on our surround sound system. We were originally thinking of buying a system in the $250-$350 price range, but then we came across this 7.1 Channel system. I did a TON of research and you definitely get the most for your money with this Onkyo system. The entire system is easy to set up and the remote control is simple to use to adjust settings based on your room configuration. The sound quality is crystal clear and since we have an HDMI sound system in our other room, it is really hard to tell the difference between this Onkyo system that doesn't have HDMI and our existing Yamaha system with HDMI. You will pay a little more for this system especially since it doesn't come with a DVD player, however we bought an Onkyo single disc DVD player for $130 and it works perfectly. If you're a huge researcher like me and you're looking for value and quality, definitely go with Onkyo - Bose and Pioneer are too much money for comparable quality. |

After 2 tons of research we bought the 790 and am very happy with it. A fantastic value for the money.
Several reviewers mentioned how hot this unit runs. With this in mind I sealed the compartment on the entertainment center where the Onkyo lives and installed a 32 cfm "muffin" fan to pull air over the top of the unit and discharge the hot air out the back. Using a digital temp. probe the compartment temprature dropped from 105 to 76 degrees F. The fan plugs into the switched outlet on the back of the receiver so it runs only when the receiver is on. The fan cost $20.00 at Radio Shack and was a piece of crumb cake to install---Enjoy |

| I cannot believe all you get for such a low price. The speakers are not going to win any kind of beauty contest but (oh my) the sound is huge. I checked out a lot of speakers, and for the price, nothing can touch this system. I would highly recommend them. |

| Onkyo is one of the Pioneer world class audio company. This system is well equiped with a powerful 7.1 Channels Pro-logic and XM satellite receiver technolgoy. The CinemaFilter cut down the noise level of the original audio/video sound track noise. The NeuralSurround produces the best ever surround sound beyond the price range of this system. There is no competitive home theater system in the market can provide such a powerful sound system with the 7 well matched speakers. |
